Urban Studio

Using the work of the Rural Studio in Hale County, Alabama as a model, E/BFSC has developed a partnership among architects (OPX), social services (E/BFSC, Center for the Study of Social Policy), youth programs, and the community to create projects that supports families and youth.  Ultimately, this collaboration will include local Architecture and Social Work Schools. The Rural Studio was created to ensure students viewed architecture as a discipline committed to environmental, social, political, and aesthetic issues.  The ideas was conceived as an opportunity to create of homes and community centers designed with the same set of architectural principles as those buildings made for prominent clients with sizeable budgets. The first project was the Music Studio at Browne Educational Campus.  This was an incredible effort in the spring of 2008 during which the students worked side by side with the architects, social workers and teachers to create a safe place to develop their skills and showcase their talents.  The success of the Music Studio will be used as a springboard for further development of the Urban Studio.
